Preparing Your Return

Before You Leave

As you study for your final exams, pack up all your belongings, and prepare to bid farewell to your host school and country consider this list of steps that will aid you in your return to life in the U.S. As you get ready to go:
  1. Write down the contact information of the new friends, teachers, or host family members that you hope to keep in touch with.
  2. Purchase souvenirs and take pictures of your favorite sights.
  3. Copy down your favorite recipes!
  4. Make sure you have registered for next term's classes at NDSU. This may include getting in contact with your advisor through email.
  5. Read the information below about Transcripts and what will happen with your NDSU Transcript.

Transcript from Abroad

Before you leave your host school, make sure your host university sends your transcripts directly to the Office of International Student and Study Abroad Services.

If they are sending it by EXPRESS MAIL:   If they are sending it by REGULAR MAIL:

If there are classes that you did not have approved for equivalency on your Course Approval Form before you left or while abroad, you can still get them up until the transcript is sent to Registration and Records (approximately 1-2 months after your return). After that, you can still get approval for courses but you would use alternative forms for the process. See the Academics page for more information on those options.

NDSU Processing and Transcript

Financial Aid Warning

At the beginning of the semester following your study abroad experience, you will likely receive an email from Student Financial Services that indicates that you are on "Financial Aid Warning". It is important to know that this is a notice rather than a hold. It's only after two consecutive semesters of not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress that SFS start to hold the financial aid/loans for students.

  • If you were not on Financial Aid Warning previous to your study abroad experience: You do not need to do anything. Your aid will come in as it normally does and the once the transcript is received and processed, then the warning will be removed retroactively.
  • If you were already on Financial Aid Warning previous to your study abroad experience: You can follow the instructions on how to appeal. You only do this if you were already on Financial Aid Warning; if you haven't received this warning before you do not need to complete this appeal.

Transcript Processing

Once your transcript from abroad is received and processed by Study Abroad Services, you will receive an automatic notification from the study abroad portal that a document has been attached to your account. This email indicates: 1.) you can login on the Study Abroad website to see a copy of the transcript, and 2.) your transcript has been sent to Registration and Records for the next steps of the process.

Transcript processing by Registration and Records will take approximately 1-2 months. Once complete the number of credits passed and a "P" are added to your NDSU transcript (provided you passed at least one class abroad). Credit transfer decisions are based on the information contained in your host university transcript.  Any course equivalencies that you had approved will not show on the transcript, but will be marked as completed requirements on the backside for you. Examples of how your transcript will appear in the two stages of processing are provided below.
