**OPTIONAL PRE-SESSION FOR BEGINNER CHINESE LEVEL STUDENTS!**

Take beginner Chinese language and culture classes in the morning with excursions in the afternoon to cultural sites around Beijing including the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, the National Theatre, the Olympic Stadium, Peking Opera, and Chinese Acrobatics. Students will also get a chance to practice their newly acquired Chinese with Tsinghua university students.
Tsinghua University is located in northwest Beijing, near the Summer Palace and Peking University. The picturesque campus hosts several royal gardens dating back to the Qing Dynasty as well as stunning modern architecture. Public transportation is convenient and inexpensive.
Upon completing orientation, students will be dispersed to 30 different locations. Geography, climate, and general living situations will vary greatly between placements.

Course not offered for credit. Academic credit will be determined by students' home institutions.
U.S. participants will attend an orientation program at Tsinghua University in Beijing to meet their Chinese partners, learn about China"s poverty alleviation issues, and develop plans to implement their service projects. Projects commonly involve teaching English in local schools or computer training. Participants will then travel in teams to their sites in rural areas throughout China where they will reside for two weeks. Transportation will be organized and paid for by Tsinghua University. Each group will consist of approximately 2-3 international students, 5 Tsinghua students, and a faculty advisor. All Chinese participants speak English, and Chinese knowledge is not a requirement for U.S. student participation.
Housing and Meals
During orientation in Beijing, students will be housed at the Overseas Student Dormitory at the Tsinghua University main campus. While completing the service learning projects in rural China, students will stay in local accommodations arranged by Tsinghua University. Tuition, board, and lodging included in the program fee.
Tsinghua University, founded in 1911, is one of China's premier universities and is widely recognized for its engineering and applied sciences programs. It is commonly compared to MIT in the U.S. Tsinghua University has over 35,000 students.
The School of Continuing Education at Tsinghua University has been collaborating with the Wang Foundation since 2006 to support poverty alleviation through international education and service learning. The mission of the Wang Foundation is to build cross-cultural knowledge and create global citizens.
programs allow students to participate in reciprocal exchanges with students at ISEP member institutions worldwide, while paying their home university tuition. Students attending US universities that are ISEP-Exchange members are eligible to apply for these programs at other international ISEP-Exchange member universities. Chances of placement vary by location.
programs allow students to enroll directly in a host institution abroad, instead of exchanging places with another student. Chances of placement are typically excellent for qualified applicants and some sites offer special academic programs and excursions. Students attending US universities that are either ISEP-Exchange members or ISEP-Direct members can participate in ISEP-Direct programs abroad.
